Your Dental Questions Answered

Here at Advanced Family Dental we get a lot of dental questions from patients. We decided to answer them in the Q & A.

Q: Why is it important to brush twice a day?

There are several reasons why it is so important. The first is because brushing, flossing and rinsing twice a day can reduce bacteria in the mouth. This can help prevent disease development and avoid halitosis.

Q: What is the main cause of cavities?

Many people think that sugar is the prime cause of cavities. This is partially true, acid produced by bacteria in your mouth is the cause of cavities. However, these bacteria are triggered to make acid when you eat anything that has carbohydrates — and sugar is a carb. But there are other carbs, rice, potatoes, bread, fruits, and vegetables are also carbs.
Once the acid eats into your tooth, the bacteria has a little hole it lives in where tooth brushing and floss can not reach. The bacteria continue to metabolize carbs and produce acids — and your cavity will get bigger.
Q: What cause tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the process that will end in a dental caries or cavity. It occurs when bacteria in your mouth create acids that eat away at your teeth. It is important to treat tooth decay because it can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss.
The combination of bacteria and certain food causes tooth decay. A sticky substance known as plaque contains bacteria and it is always forming on your teeth and gums.
As the bacteria feed on the sugars in the food you eat, it creates acids. The acids will attack the teeth after you eat. Over a period of time, these acids can destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.

Q: What if I am scared to visit the Dentist?

Our doctors, Dr. Skinner and Dr. Matheson and their compassionate staff take extra measures to ensure the comfort of their patients.

Many people worry about visiting the dentist. You may feel nervous and your may actually feel sick to your stomach. This is not uncommon; some people become so nervous that they avoid seeing the dentist. We don’t recommend this as it can lead to serious problems, including infected gums and teeth, difficulty chewing, as well as lack of self-confidence because of bad teeth or bad breath.
